We lead our lives "waiting" for certain things to happen. We act by predicting a future (actions, opinions, relationships, performance) as uncertain as it is uncontrollable.
When what we had hoped for, in a totally arbitrary way does not happen, we suffer.
Unfulfilled Expectation = Self-Procured Suffering
Totally excluding expectations from our life would be quite impossible, but we can learn to master them by:
– Tolerate waiting: separating expectation from reality.
– Don't act on expectations: Imagine alternative action plans.
– Wondering what that expectation tells us about us and our emotional experience.
